...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead released its newest album, Tao of the Dead, this past week, composed of two parts: "Tao of the Dead," and "Strange News from Another Planet." While both display AYWKUTD's generally fascinating mixture of punk, prog, and post-rock, Tao of the Dead falls quite a bit short of the mark set by Trail of Dead's previous releases.

Swedish indie-pop band The Concretes has released a fourth LP, WYWH, their first since 2007. The Concretes definitely has a bit of fun in naming its releases, and that energy continues to be present in their albums. But while WYWH is often lightly enjoyable, much of it is somewhat difficult to stand by. The balance between unwavering pop and something a bit more serious and profound is just not quite present on WYWH, and the album certainly takes a few hits as a result.

New York indie-punk band Les Savy Fav's latest release was scheduled to hit shelves on the 14th, although it ended up being released earlier due to an extremely early leak. Release curiosities aside, Root for Ruin is an interesting, if not particularly great album. It's clearly Les Savy Fav, and at the same time a clear development in the band's evolving style. It's good to see that Les Savy Fav is far from stagnating, Root for Ruin being the band's fifth album; still, it would have been even nicer had Root for Ruin been a terrific album.

Canadian indie-rock band Land of Talk released its second studio album since its formation in 2006 this past Tuesday. An extraordinarily typical indie-rock album, not much else is truly extraordinary about Land of Talk. That's not to say that the album is bad by any strech of the imagination. For an exceedingly generic album, Land of Talk is exceedingly good. It is very much a pleasure to listen to, just not much more than that.

Canadian indie band The Acorn released its newest full-length No Ghost to its Canadian audience earlier this summer. Releasing in the coming month stateside, No Ghost, the third album since the band's formation in 2003, reflects The Acorn's years of time spent developing a deep and interesting sound, but also its relative inexperience recording albums. While it contains a number of very strong tracks, it lacks the cohesion the tracks really deserve, and suffers as a result.
