Singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek released a new solo LP, Admiral Fell Promises on the 13th, under his band's name, Sun Kil Moon. Admiral Fell Promises is a beautiful solo album, displaying his excellent acoustic guitar work, as well as his terrific voice, but onfortunately, not at the same time. In the end, instead of being the fantastic album that Kozelek is clearly capable of creating, Admiral Fell Promises, bogged down by seriously lengthy tracks (tracks average 6 minutes long) and guitar and voice that never really work together, doesn't sound all that great.

The Five Ghosts is the newest release from Broken Social Scene subset, Stars. The album, perhaps best described as indie-electronic, maintains a very simple sound, punctuated by moments of crystallization. This style is, in the end, both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness, as the level of simplicity does, at times, totally overwhelm other positive aspects of the album.

Long Beach alt-rock group Avi Buffalo was founded by then-high school student Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg (whose nickname, Avi, became the source of the band's name). Zahner-Isenberg met the rest of his band and started out, like so many other groups, by posting songs on Myspace. After Avi Buffalo was noticed by Sub Pop, the band put together their debut album and on Tuesday released that self-titled introduction. Avi Buffalo demonstrates some definite potential on the part of the band - a hundred different influences mixed with some real creativity makes for an interesting debut, though the album certainly has flaws.

Québécois band The Besnard Lakes released their third album on the 9th. The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night, aside from following the pattern of increasingly long and irritating album names, is a pretty good album; what it lacks in certain areas, including primarily vocals, it more than makes up for in others. In short, The Besnard Lakes's strategy of releasing albums approximately every three years seems to have worked out pretty well for the band.

Scottish (but not Glaswegian) indie-rock band Frightened Rabbit released its third LP on the first of the month. The Winter of Mixed Drinks, which topped at 61 on the UK charts clearly shows the growing popularity of the band - and probably the power of Fat Cat Records. Unfortunately, the album is really nothing special. [...]
