After playing with NYC group Black Dice, artist and musician Sebastian Blanck began recording on his own, and Tuesday's Alibi Coast is his first solo album. With Alibi Coast, Blanck combines instrumental experience from Black Dice along with contributions from several vocalists to create an interesting, though not entirely unique, album. But uniqueness aside, when Alibi Coast works well, it's certainly a pleasure to listen to. The problem, then, is that the same idea can only be a pleasure for so long.

Indie-folk-punk group Defiance, Ohio (from Indiana), founded in 2002, released their third LP, Midwestern Minutes, on Tuesday. With Minutes, the band has developed an acoustic take on a range of genres into a colorful, well-balanced mix. While Minutes isn't a perfect album, it's definitely one that displays the creativity of the band behind it - and it's certainly enjoyable for that.

Montreal indie band Wolf Parade, founded in 2003 by frontman Spencer Krug after his time with Frog Eyes, released their third album, Expo 86, on Tuesday. Expo 86 takes Wolf Parade's eclectic sound and forms it into cohesive and, at least to some degree, interesting sound. Though Expo 86 suffers from some rather significant issues, in its strengths it still displays Wolf Parade's creativity.

Seattle indie-experimental band Minus the Bear released their fourth LP, Omni, earlier this month. Minus the Bear has enjoyed increased popularity over their last three albums, and it seems as if Omni will be no different. With it, the band takes the approaches of their earlier albums and distills them into the experimentation of Omni. However, while Omni certainly shows creativity and skill on the part of the band, it suffers from a number of serious flaws that prevent it from reaching excellence.

Quebec indie band Plants and Animals released their second EP, La La Land, on Tuesday. La La Land is noisier than the band's earlier work, but is still recognizably the same sort of sound as characterized Plants and Animals last album, Parc Avenue, which was nominated for the Polaris Award. Unfortunately, that sound has matured less than it has simply increased in complexity. As such, La La Land has its successes, but is weighed down by mediocrity.
