These United States returned last Tuesday with a new album, What Lasts. Right on the 35 minute line between EP and LP, What Lasts is a relatively short introduction to the new developments These United States has made to their sound since their last album. Unfortunately, it's shortness may actually be a boon to the band, as the band really doesn't sound very good on What Lasts.

Now fairly prolific band Barenaked Ladies released their newest album at the end of last month. Also their twelfth album, All in Good Time, doesn't walk the line between innovative and clichéd; instead, it falls to both sides' extremes. Some songs are quite interesting, while others are simply dull and uninnovative. Ultimately, the all but worthless lyrics become the deciding factor, and the album tips irrevocably towards inanity.

NYC band The Magnetic Fields, founded by frontman Stephin Merrit in 1989, released its newest album, Realism, last month. Realism is a bit of a departure from form for the Fields, who, while their last few albums have moved away from the synthy experimentation of their first five or six albums, have with Realism injected a folk-like aesthetic into their peculiar blend of indie-pop. While Realism suffers from a substantial number of flaws and seemingly misguided decisions, the Fields' creativity shines through at the best moments, leaving the album at least occasionally interesting.

Eels, led by E (known to some as Mark Oliver Everett), produced its eighth LP, which released on the 19th. End Times focuses its lens on the depressing topic of divorce, along with other topics of similar nature, performed to often upbeat, generally major melodies and tunes. This odd combination of sounds, lyrics, and vocal stylings leads End Times to be, for the most part, an unsuccessful, though certainly not meritless release.

After working with musicians including Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch, and Bright Eyes, David Rawlings released his first solo album, A Friend of a Friend, in November as Dave Rowlings Machine. While A Friend of a Friend shows influences from many of the genres Rawlings has worked in, it mainly serves as an entry into the field of country and bluegrass. Unfortunately, A Friend of a Friend suffers from a number of fairly serious issues and in the end does not turn out to be terribly successful.
