English indie-folk group Noah and the Whale, formed in 2006, released their third and newest LP, Last Night on Earth, early last month. Last Night on Earth is, at least in some parts, a step forward from the band's last two albums, which, while at least somewhat popular in the band's home country, have been less than fascinating. Unfortunately, while Last Night on Earth is an improvement for the group, it's not enough of one to be truly interesting.

San Francisco art rock group Deerhoof, founded in 1994, released their tenth album on the 25th. As experimental as any of the group's earlier work, Deerhoof vs. Evil is interesting but flawed (and perhaps a bit less than cohesive). As an album, Deerhoof vs. Evil fits into Deerhoof's extensive library well - though it's neither the band's best work nor an especially excellent album.

Calgary experimental group Braids, formed four years ago, when the band members were students at the same high school, released their second album, Native Speaker, on the 18th. The band's first album with a label, Native Speaker is a colorful album that, certain successes aside, doesn't quite pull off its experiments as well as Braids might have hoped.

LA rock band Chief, founded in NYC when the members were students at NYU, has released their debut album, Modern Rituals, just a year after the band returned to its California home. Unfortunately,Modern Rituals is neither a particularily well-executed nor a creative album. Incredible amounts of repetition, uninspiring vocals, and lyrics that epitomize "generic" work together to prevent the album from being much more than tolerable.

NYC band School of Seven Bells, founded in 2007 by Benjamin Curtis and twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, released their second album, Disconnect from Desire, on Tuesday. The band combines elements of pop and indie with electronic ambiance, combining the styles of the members' previous bands to form a new sound. Unfortunately, this sound is less than creative, a problem which, combined with a number of flaws in various parts of Disconnect from Desire, leaves the album quite weak.
