NYC band School of Seven Bells, founded in 2007 by Benjamin Curtis and twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, released their second album, Disconnect from Desire, on Tuesday. The band combines elements of pop and indie with electronic ambiance, combining the styles of the members' previous bands to form a new sound. Unfortunately, this sound is less than creative, a problem which, combined with a number of flaws in various parts of Disconnect from Desire, leaves the album quite weak.

With main project Bloc Party on hiatus, British indie musician Kele Okereke has focused on his own music, releasing his first solo album, The Boxer, on Monday. With The Boxer, Okereke takes the indie-electronic aesthetic of Bloc Party and mixes it with a strong dance influence for a buzzing, electric sound. Unfortunately, this ends up more disjointed than anything else, which, combined with the fact that The Boxer never manages to step past a fairly pedestrian approach to its wealth of genres, does the album very little good.

Band of Horses released its third album, Infinite Arms, earlier this week. Their first under the Columbia label, Infinite Arms is a diverse, unique, and surprisingly unsatisfactory album. Certainly not the band's best work, one can only hope that in the future, Band of Horses puts a good deal more thought into each track, rather than just thinking of the album as a whole.

Zelienople, a Chicago band named after a Pennsylvania borough, combines elements from post-rock, shoegaze, and drone. Their newest LP, Give It Up, released earlier this month, displays Zelienople's approach to this increasingly common combination of genres, falling squarely into the realm of the ambient. However, a lack of real innovation or creativity prevents Give It Up from being much more than another fairly generic ambient album.

Jason Molina, lead singer of down-tempo, occasionally lo-fi indie-folk band Magnolia Electric Co. has teamed up with Centro-matic lead Will Johnson to create a full-length collaboration. Both musicians bring significant musicality, experience, and technical proficiency, and it is easy to imagine the two working together quite well. But while the two would seem a promising [...]
