Virginia post-rock band Gifts from Enola, founded in 2005, released their fifth album, the self-titled Gifts from Enola, earlier this month. With Gifts from Enola, the band has further developed its rich instrumental sound to create an energetic, tightly-packed album which, while suffering from certain less-than-exciting sections, is generally quite interesting.

These United States returned last Tuesday with a new album, What Lasts. Right on the 35 minute line between EP and LP, What Lasts is a relatively short introduction to the new developments These United States has made to their sound since their last album. Unfortunately, it's shortness may actually be a boon to the band, as the band really doesn't sound very good on What Lasts.

After playing with NYC group Black Dice, artist and musician Sebastian Blanck began recording on his own, and Tuesday's Alibi Coast is his first solo album. With Alibi Coast, Blanck combines instrumental experience from Black Dice along with contributions from several vocalists to create an interesting, though not entirely unique, album. But uniqueness aside, when Alibi Coast works well, it's certainly a pleasure to listen to. The problem, then, is that the same idea can only be a pleasure for so long.

Singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek released a new solo LP, Admiral Fell Promises on the 13th, under his band's name, Sun Kil Moon. Admiral Fell Promises is a beautiful solo album, displaying his excellent acoustic guitar work, as well as his terrific voice, but onfortunately, not at the same time. In the end, instead of being the fantastic album that Kozelek is clearly capable of creating, Admiral Fell Promises, bogged down by seriously lengthy tracks (tracks average 6 minutes long) and guitar and voice that never really work together, doesn't sound all that great.

NYC band School of Seven Bells, founded in 2007 by Benjamin Curtis and twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, released their second album, Disconnect from Desire, on Tuesday. The band combines elements of pop and indie with electronic ambiance, combining the styles of the members' previous bands to form a new sound. Unfortunately, this sound is less than creative, a problem which, combined with a number of flaws in various parts of Disconnect from Desire, leaves the album quite weak.
