After three critically-acclaimed albums (and two early self-released LPs), Joanna Newsom released her newest album, Have One on Me on the 23rd. Have One on Me combines the best parts of Newsom's earlier albums with some new creative and musical twists. It's at the same time Newsom's longest album and her best album overall - she's taken her immense creativity and applied it to a huge number of concepts to create just over two hours of immensely interesting music. As such, Have One on Me is nothing short of excellent.

Austin indie band Shearwater's last album, Rook, was our 2008 top album, and deservedly so. Now, almost two years later, Shearwater's put out their newest album, The Golden Archipelago. Even though it will naturally be compared to such an excellent album, The Golden Archipelago stands up well, combining the gorgeous musical detail that lies at the core of Shearwater's music with a new shift towards more typical rock dynamics. It's not quite the masterpiece that Rook was, but it's still very good.

English band Field Music released its newest album this past week. Field Music (Measure), a long (20 track, 70 minute) album is a collection of mostly unrelated tracks with the common theme of being incredibly repetitive and for the most part, vastly uninteresting. The album has some fairly strong tracks, but a few among a full score is simply not enough to give Field Music (Measure) a score that is anywhere near decent.

Title Tracks is the solo project of John Davis, formed in 2008, a few years after the breakup of his earlier group, Q and Not U. With Title Tracks' debut LP, Davis demonstrates experience gained from seven years with Q and Not U as well as his own creativity, combined to create a truly interesting musical presence which is uniquely his own. It Was Easy is a great debut, and though it suffers from certain flaws, is on the whole a very enjoyable album.

The newest of what is now three albums from Untied States, Instant Everything, Constant Nothing seems to be going for the full international approach - in contrast to the bands name, a more regionally focused play on words. To be more specific, Atlanta based Untied States released Everything a few months back in the UK only. It is now (this coming Tuesday) releasing the album in Europe and the US, under the French label Distile. But logistics aside, Instant Everything, Constant Nothing is very good, if often somewhat strange. Clearly experimental, but done by a band that could easily have played straight rock had they so desired, Everything is a truly interesting album.
